A little girl is born inside a flower. She is so small, the size of a thumb, that she is called Thumbelina. Poor Thumbelina is first kidnapped by a slimy toad, then snatched by an ugly May bug. Her friend, a field mouse, encourages her to marry a mole who lives in the dark underground away from Thumbelina's beloved sunlight and fresh air. Thumbelina saves the life of a bird, who in turn saves her. This is a retelling of an 1835 story from Hans Christian Andersen.
